Parenting the Survivor Workshop
October 17, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeRape Response is sponsoring a Parenting the Survivor Workshop this fall!
Six Week Series: September 12 – October 17, Wednesdays 6pm-7:30pm
Being a parent is difficult. Navigating the road to healing after trauma can feel overwhelming. Let us help! This 6 week group is intended to offer support and education to parents of sexual abuse/sexual assault survivors (infancy – adolescence). This is not a ‘therapy’ group. Each family is encouraged to seek therapy in addition to attending this workshop.
September 12-Week 1: Introduction and Orientation
Learn about Rape Response and get to know each other. This is a good time to set up rules and expectations for the group so each member can get the most out of our time together. We will also provide information on community resources that may further support families who are healing from trauma.
September 19-Week 2: Trauma and Development
We will learn about trauma from the perspective of the developing body and brain. Stages of healing and techniques to start trying immediately at home will be shared during this session.
September 26-Week 3: The Trauma Informed Family
During this session, members will identify and share what is working and what is not working in their family as they deal with the aftermath of trauma. Practical solutions and suggestions will be shared, along with tools for self-care.
October 3-Week 4: Share and Support
Based on information gained in the previous weeks, each family will prepare and discuss specific changes in routine, discipline techniques, self-care techniques, and parenting perspectives that they have made or plan to make. The group will offer feedback and support.
October 10-Week 5: Healing Families
Children (all ages) who are survivors are invited to attend with their parents for an extended session of enjoyable activities and challenges. This is an opportunity for children to engage in a fun and supportive healing environment. Counselors and facilitators are available to answer questions and make suggestions for further family activities and support.
October 17-Week 6: The New Beginning
As we say goodbye, parents are invited to plan next steps in their healing journey. From organizing home and family routines that are trauma sensitive, to creating a list of social supporters, this is an opportunity to start creating your new normal.
